The Head of the Statue. The face renders a youthful emperor, even though the statue was constructed when Augustus was about forty years of age. The Prima Porta style of facial construction consists of a broad cranium and narrow chin, sharp ridged eyebrows, aquiline nose and a rounded mouth.

So far the message of the Augustus of Primaporta is clear: he is an excellent orator and military victor with the youthful and perfect body of a Greek athlete. Is that all there is to this sculpture? Definitely not! The sculpture contains even more symbolism. First, at Augustus' right leg is cupid figure riding a dolphin.

The marble statue of Augustus at Prima Porta adopts features from a Greek athletic statue from fifth century B.C., the Doryphoros of Polykleitos; its head, facial construction, leg and overall pose. It was found in the villa of Livia in Prima Porta and was constructed to commemorate the Roman victory over the Parthians in 20 B.C.

The statue was discovered in the villa of Augustus' wife Livia at Prima Porta, a few kilometres north of Rome; It is now on display in the Braccio Nuovo (new wing) of the Musei Vaticani. It's date of origin is not entirely certain but it was probably made shortly after Augustus' death and is likely a copy of an original bronze statue vowed to Augustus by the senate in 20BC as a monument.

One of the more interesting monuments made during the reign of Rome's first emperor Augustus (r. 27 BC-AD 14) is a statue referred to as the "Augustus of Prima Porta". I still remember the talk that one of my teachers in Mediterranean archaeology gave about this statue.
